RIDER AND/OR HORSE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

James Moore has the personal goal of competing for the United States Equestrian Team and is currenty long-listed for the World Equestrian Games, Pan-American Games, and Olympic Games. Jim has trained with Captain Mark Phillips, the current U.S. Coach, as well as Jack Le Goff, the past coach. Jim has been ranked in the top 50 in the North American High Score Leaderboard many times. He was chosen to represent the United States as an individual in the 2004 World Cup of Eventing in Pau, France. Jim has been an aspiring, talented rider that has come up through the ranks of Eventing on his own with little outside financial help.

Obviously the Sport of Three-Day Eventing is among the most expensive of all Olympic sports because of the upkeep of live horses compared to the non-living equipment of other sports. Expenses include boarding, feeding, shoeing, veterinary, transportation, training, tack and equipment costs for each horse. Rider costs include transportation, food, lodging, lessons, equipment, and entry fees. Jim has been competing on the international scene and has financed this through his teaching and training business, Prestige Training, as well as small gifts from individuals, sport funds, grants, family, and friends. Other international atheletes rely on individual and corporate funding to relieve the tremendous financial burden. There is no government funding for American equestrians on their road to “The Team”. Once chosen for a team, there is limited funding available through the USA’s non-profit organizations that field teams such as US Equestrian Team Foundation, www.uset.org. But until that time, Jim needs your help to get there!

The goal is o be chosen for a team for the Olympic Games in Bejiing, China (Hong Kong for the Equestrians!) in 2008 as well as the Pan American Games in 2007 as part of the selection trials for the Olympics. Jim’s mare, “Herzjuwel” owned by Prestige Training, is competing at Advanced CCI*** Level and will be qualified CCI**** in the Fall of 2006. Jim needs another horse to better his chances for the U.S. Team. He is competing against privately- or corporately-sponsored, veteran equestrians who have large numbers of horses they can ride to qualify for the team. You can help by supporting the current horse or by funding and following a new prospect. There are ways to sponsor and receive a tax deduction through the American Horse Trials Foundation www.ahtf3day.org, (a 501 c 3 dedicated to Eventers). There is also the possibility a horse syndication.

A Sydication is a limited partnership of shareholders that purchase and maintain a competition horse for the duration of the agreement. The horse’s expenses are part of the shareholding as is any prize money won by that horse. It can be set up where partners can trade shares on a quarterly or yearly basis when the horse is appraised for market value. The idea is that the horse’s value will appreciate with successful competition experience. A stallion, for example can also be marketed for breeding purposes during his career. There is obvious risk with this venture as well as potential gain.

As a potential sponsor you might ask, “What is appealing about Eventing?” Eventing is an Olympic sport with lifetime practioners. It celebrates the important virtues of versatility, teamwork, and courage. For riders it is a whole lot of fun in which to participate, as well as being entertaining to watch for spectators. A practical reason to donate is to receive the charitable tax deduction. However, a more traditional reason to donate is the appeal of marketing a name (private or business) to an elite audience. This can happen by a name being mentioned at awards ceremonies, over public address systems at events, in ccmpetition programs, in newspapers and magazines, on trucks and horsetrailers, on horseblankets and saddle pads, on banners and displays, and on stationery. The media coverage are responding to the growing spectator interest in horse sports. There is now major television coverage of the horse sports held throughout North America and Europe, especially the Olympics, Pan-American, and World Equestrian Games. There are hundreds of regional and national horse-related periodicals in which these magazines and newsletters report all levels of competitions. The internet has allowed worldwide communication in real time for horse sports with information on competitions, horse products, boarding and breeding facilities, veterinary clinics, equine preparatory schools and universities, etc. Together these many media outlets create the potential for you and/or your business to make a valuable impression on the marketplace.
